WoodfiredFor at least a few thousand years, wood was the principle fuel for firing pottery.
At some point in history, potters discovered that the wood ash would melt and effect the clay to produce subtle and beautiful surfaces on the work during the firing process. During a wood firing, the wood itself becomes the glaze, and at extremely high temperatures molten ash can run, drip and layer the pots with this ash glaze. The tradition of firing with wood continues today and contemporary ceramic enthusiasts around the world still go to great lengths to collect, chop and stack the wood so that they can stoke the kiln for many continuous hours/days to orchestrate these unique surfaces. |
